7/7/2023 0 Comments Name day alexandros![]() The name Odysseus, of uncertain derivation according to our knowledge now, is often linked to the verb odussomai, both in Homer and in commentators. On another note, the Greeks thought often and deeply about the meanings and etymologies of names. There are many other examples throughout Greek literature - I recall a lovely play on the name Zeus and the verb "zeugnumi", to yoke, in Homer (although I don't have the passage to hand). To Thebes they came, all besplattered with blood /įrom the mountain sorrow, and not Pentheus, bearing. ![]() The pun is on the similarity of the name Pentheus (in the accusative case, Penthea) to a word for something sorrowful, "penthema". A particularly nice example is Theocritus, Idylls 26, 25-6: Punning on names' literal meanings certainly did occur in Ancient Greek.
